Harley Quinn Goes to Anime Fantasy World in ‘Suicide Squad ISEKAI’
Harley Quinn, Joker, and the antiheroes are entering a fantasy land with dragons and pig people in Suicide Squad ISEKAI.
Isekai is a fantasy genre has become one of the most popular genres in anime over the last decade. The protagonists are transported from their everyday, mundane lives into fantasy words filled with fantastical creatures, wondrous powers, magic, and plenty of dangers. Think Alice in Wonderland, The Never Ending Story, and The Wizard of Oz. In anime, the best-known is likely Inuyasha.
The latest addition to the genre has DC characters rampaging through an Isekai fantasy world.
First Look
During a panel at Anime Expo 2023, Warner Bros. Japan and WIT Studio revealed a new anime series starring some DC favorites. It’s titled Suicide Squad ISEKAI — literally, Suicide Squad Different World. It takes the squad from Gotham to a fantasy realm with dragons, knights, ogres, and mutant pig people.
Suicide Squad ISEKAI Details
There’s not a ton out on this. We know that James Gunn and Safran are not linking the series to the new universe they are creating, which leaves the Isekia creators room to get creative.
Eri Osada, the chief animation director of Jujutsu Kaisen, is directing Suicide Squad ISEKAI. Tappei Nagatsuki and Eiji Umehara are writing the show’s story. The pair have previous experience in the Isekai genre through their work on the very popular Isekai series Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World. Character design is by Naoto Hosoda (Lupin III) and Akira Amano (PSYCHO-PASS).
Amano is especially excited to work on the new series.
